Animation Statement
The focus of our animation was to highlight,
emphasize and pronounce specific emotions by changing the fictional aspects of
the first Harry Potters movie and recreate it in a new light. By each of us
choosing a powerful scene from the movie, we were able to narrow the timeline
of the entire movie down to three monumental portions. Our main goal was to tell
the story of Harry’s personal dilemma he faces as he discovers he is a wizard.
We referenced the concepts of the original movies fictional storyline and
recreated it based on a flipbook animation style. And focused on movement
through frame-by-frame animation. The hand-drawn still frames allowed us to
highlight and change the timing of the scenes to better tell our version of
Harry’s story and how he might see this new world of wizarding, and how they
might see him, that he’s just stepped into. The animating process was also part
of us searching for the story within the film. Hand drawn frame-by-frame and
keypose animation requires more time than other forms of animating, and with
that time, comes our creativity in the art making. Setting out on this assignment
I would not have originally had the inner dialogue of how Harry is feeling at
these specific scenes, but after drawing his emotions, slightest changes to his
appearance and expressions, I feel that I have a better understanding as an
artist and a fan.
Our initial theme was based on a
fan fiction animation. From there we progressed to a common admiration for the
storyline of Harry Potter. We wanted to use the techniques that we learned
about frame-by-frame animation and combine it with the motion picture techniques.
By incorporating our each unique artistic style, we aimed to reinterpret the
story in a new, hand-drawn, artistic manner. We picked through the lengthy
scenes and decided which were of the upmost importance. From there we took on
the laborious task of recreating through our interpretations and our personal,
unique understanding of Harrys Dilemma and drew them as we saw fit. Our styles
followed a basic guideline of an identical background of parchment paper and
hand drawn quality throughout the scenes. Aside from those similarities, we
ventured off and individually construed a personal scene based on our styles.

I really enjoyed your animation! The hand drawn looks is very cool, and I like how it looks like it was done on old parchment.
ReplyDelete5 Thumbs Up! I really enjoy how each scene began with a shot from the actual movie and then transitioned into the drawings. I think it creates a really nice effect and also shows how you accomplished it. Really well done!
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you showed the actual photograph and then made it look like a sketch and i can see the time that went into this video. I really think it got the point across and i was very impressed that it was all done frame by frame.
ReplyDeleteVery well done. The music fit the scenes very well and the drawing feel was a unique aspect to add. I liked the scene transitions and how the fade in and out.
ReplyDeleteI like the parchment and Ink, I get the Harry Potter vibe. I appreciate the frame by frame animation. Love it Love It Love It!!! Brings back so many memories. I like the transition from movie to drawn images. the detail is lovely. Quittage must be hard to animate! Great Work!
ReplyDeleteOver all I think you guys did an amazing job. I loved how you used the actual scenes and "traced" them to get the drawing portion of the video. It was neat to see your different styles and bring them together as one. Harry Potter seemed like a great fit I think for you guys!
ReplyDeleteThe attention to detail is very well done. It feels like a blend of storyboard animation and fan work. I can't imagine how long it would have taken to trace over each of these scenes, let alone animate them.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the transition from the movie clips to your hand drawn work. It shows you're drawing from an original source, as well as shows your appreciation and dedication to the series.
As a Hufflepuff, I approve.
I really liked how you included scenes directly from the movie and layered your own drawing with that. It added extra layers into the animation that connected us as viewers back to the actual movie. I liked that even though you had your scenes split up, your drawings looked cohesive together. I could tell that you are all really passionate about this work. five thumbs way up!

ReplyDeleteI can see the time and detail your group has put into this project.
ReplyDeleteJust some critique -
While I do like the transitions, they did seem to linger a bit.
In the Quidditch scene, it looks as though you forgot to remove the live screen capture layer behind the animation.
In one of the scenes - maybe it was the wand shop, the artistry and detail (especially shading) are breathtaking! Great Job!
I really enjoyed the transition from the actual shot of the movie to the drawing of that scene. It was something unique that I really appreciated. Your drawing style and animation style was very cool as well. The transitions between each of your styles of drawing too was also really interesting, I liked seeing each of your styles brought out through each scene. The frame by frame animation sounds like it took a really long time, so good job doing that. Must have taken a lot of patience!
