The place I chose to photograph was a park. A park is place people go to relax, play, or catch up. It's somewhere most people take for granted. It's a place in nature that we have taken for ourselves, so we should treat it that way. Things at a park include a jungle gym, swings, sand box, tennis court, basketball court, picnic tables, large grassy areas, to name a few.
The first picture I chose was of a tennis court. I wanted to show the importance of cleaning up and keeping a place like a park clean, not only for other people, but for animals. A park is a place used by people and nature, so keeping it trash free is really important. I chose to duplicate sand diggers and place them around the tennis court to bring that idea to life. You wouldn't usually see sand diggers on a flat hard surface, but the idea is that even though you don't think about it at the time, trash and junk can build up to become such an issue that the place needs to be renovated or completely tore down. It is so important to keep public areas clean and understand that your little bag of trash can dramatically impact animals that reside there or even nature in itself.
The second picture I chose was of an area where you would normally see kids playing in water. I chose to put animals playing there because I wanted to show that a park, although in nature, is a place for people and pets, not for the animals that reside there. The more area that we take up for us, the less natural area there is for the animals that need that area to live. We as humans are so concerned for our well being and our pets treat outside like it's a place they can only go so often. When I think of nature, I think of squirrels, birds, foxes, bears, ect. But we turn a place they live in to a place that's convenient for us. Putting these household animals here playing and being free shows that nature really is a place for animals to be happy and free.
The last picture I chose was of a merry-go-round. This was (for me) one of the best things to play on when I was a kid. Going back to my first image, I wanted to enforce the idea of how important it is to pick up after yourself and treat public areas (especially places that kids go) with the upmost respect. Choosing the quote "what goes around comes around" was the most influential one I could think of to portray that idea. I believe that if you treat nature or public outdoor areas poorly, karma will come back and get you. You might think that leaving a small piece of trash out will be okay, but that small piece of trash turns into something way bigger than you would expect. It takes one person to start something good. A lot of people treat the outdoors like no matter what we do, nature will always work itself out. But, like a merry-go-round, even the things we create have a way of turning against us.

The second postcard is the most striking to me – the use of colors for the animals lends towards the idea that there’s something wrong with the image. The idea that only certain animals are meant to be in parks is an interesting idea and giving those “certain animals” a different color highlights that concept. I think it’s visually and conceptually strong.
ReplyDeleteKelsey,
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of using the digging toy in your first postcard as a way to clean up the trash. I think that by using an element that it often found in the park itself as a way to maintain the proper care for the park is a great way to get your theme of the abuse of the parks across.
Postcard 3 is my favorite. I really like the 3rd postcard because of the quote and how it wraps around. The idea behind it was well thought out.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy all of your images but the third is my favorite. The quote is one that we are all familiar with but how it compliments the theme of your whole project really nice. We need to treat everywhere with respect and if we do then karma (or what have you) will benefit us. All of your images are lighthearted but with an underlying serious tone and I really appreciate that aspect of your work.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Cute cat!
DeleteI enjoy the second postcard most. The contrast of color with the background is bold and well integrated. I also enjoy the connotations you described when explaining your reasoning; it makes a lot of sense, and the image is all the more intriguing to me.
ReplyDeleteOverall, your solutions are all cohesive and go together nicely. It's very impressive and shows your understanding of Photoshop. Well done.
Kelsey,
ReplyDeleteI think you did something really interesting with your first postcard. It was really shocking to see the playground equipment and litter into the tennis court. I think that isn’t ironic because it’s a toy that is used by kids to destroy and move around nature, it’s also something that is used with construction sites to destroy nature and pave over it. The court itself is paved over nature—very interesting outook!
Your third postcard is my favorite, mostly because it speaks to me.
ReplyDeleteI understand your statement, and I think it is conveyed nicely through the picture.
The addition is simple and yet effective.
Nice skills, I like how the text fits on the merry-go-round
The simplicity is what I like. You do a nice job of getting a message across in a clear and simplistic manner.
My favorite post card is your second one. It's so playful with the extra images and all of the colors. It draws the viewer in and leads their eye around the composition as well as conveying your overall message.
ReplyDeleteYour second postcard is my favorite. I really liked how you darkened the background to de-emphasize it and the bright colors of the dogs making them the focus of the picture.
ReplyDeleteKelsey,
ReplyDeleteI like your third postcard. Using the phrase, “what goes around, comes around,” on a merry-go-round fits very well for the message – and makes me smile. The phrase is a very good message to go with your theme. Well done!
Megan,
ReplyDeleteYour second postcard was my favorite. I love that you did more of a 3D perspective rather than just 2D. Over all I thought you did really well.
Kelsey,
ReplyDeleteYour first image is my favorite. I like how you used those sand diggers to show how it is important for us to clean up after ourselves, and the impact we have on the spaces we visit.
